New Hamburg graphic designer featured in book celebrating redesigns of stale brands

New Hamburg graphic designer, Nigel Gordijk of Common Sense Design, is featured in a new book that showcases recent identity work for a variety of industries. The book - called "Identity Crisis" - is written by US design guru, Jeff Fisher, and published by HOW books.

Identity Crisis is a guide for designers to show their clients the power of rethinking and redesigning their brand identities.

The book showcases the work of 50 designers around the world, including a logo and Web site that Nigel Gordijk recently created for UK-based charitable organization, Shared Ownership Homes. The case study shows how he refined the charity's branding, making it more elegant and user-friendly.

Shared Ownership Homes (SOH) has teamed up with a number of major housing associations, care providers, charities and lenders to help people with disabilities enjoy the benefits of home ownership. The original version of SOH’s Web site and logo needed to be updated to coincide with a major marketing push.

The result is a more consistent, integrated brand and a friendlier, engaging Web site. As well as improved usability – the navigation and page layouts are easier to use – the site has better accessibility, which is vital for disabled people who make up the target audience. Buttons in the top right of every page enables visitors to increase and decrease the size of the screen fonts.

Identity design - logos, letterhead, Web sites, etc - is one of the most popular topics in design books. Identity Crisis takes a fresh look at this subject by exploring the process of redesigning existing identities to help businesses refine their images, communicate with their customers, and become more successful. Readers can learn the creative and strategic thinking behind this fresh design work, as well as have a powerful tool to show clients how a professional can improve their image.

Nigel - originally from London, England - recently emigrated to Canada, settling in New Hamburg.
